Do cats make good companions for dogs?

When you’re considering adding another pet to your household, it’s a good idea to bear in mind that every dog and cat has their own personality. So whether you have a breed that is good with cats or not, the test is when you get them together in the same room: Do they get along?

We had dogs and cats growing up. I wouldn’t say they were the best of friends, rather Cleo the Persian tolerated Hud the lab. She never missed an opportunity to swat him as he passed by. But they never fought uncontrollably and they could be trusted when left alone together.

If you’re looking for a real buddy for your dog, someone to snuggle up to at night, then getting a kitten is a better choice. A kitten is new to the world and knows no different. Growing up with an older dog is a great way to bond and form the kind of relationship that includes snuggling and playing. Some female dogs become very maternal with kittens and will go the extent of grooming them and protecting them.

It’s not uncommon for dogs and cats to form long and loving relationships, but it’s important not to leave them alone together at first. Make sure you take your time when introducing a new cat into a dog-inhabited house. Take the cat or kitten on a trial basis at first to see if he or she gets along with your dog. The last thing you want to do is make your dog’s life a misery.
