More and more people are taking their cat outdoors and exploring the great world beyond the four walls of home.
One of the best things you can do to keep your cat secure and safe is to teach them to wear a harness. It is the first step in safe adventuring with your cat.
Training your cat to like wearing a harness takes time and patience. If you stick to regular, daily training sessions for 10 minutes a day, you’ll have more success with your cat and their new harness.
How to harness train your cat
There are two things you want to know before harness training your cat. One is positive reinforcement and the other is treats. Every time your cat responds well to the harness, they get a treat. But not just any old treat. It has to be a special treat reserved only for harness training.
Here are some simple steps to follow to get your cat to like wearing the harness. Practice each step daily for about 10 minutes until your cat masters it and then move onto the next one:
- Start by placing the harness on the floor in front of your cat so he or she can check it out and give it a good sniff. That deserves a treat.
- Next, place the harness gently on your cat’s back so they can start getting used to it. Treat them each time they ignore it.
- Next, get your cat to put their head through the harness by enticing them with a treat. Let get a feel for it.
- Next, carefully do up the buckle and let them get used to it. They may freeze on the spot, but don't worry. With enough encouragement and positive reinforcement, your cat will eventually get used to the harness.
- Attach a leash to the harness and let them walk around your home at first. Start inside before moving outdoors.
- Slowly move to the balcony, deck or backyard where it’s safe and there are no distractions. Pick a spot close to home.
- When you’re ready, venture outside to a quiet wood or park and spend a few minutes before heading back home. Try not to do too much on your first day out.
- Gradually work up to longer trips, each time allowing your cat to get used to the new surroundings.
During training, you can use toys or games to keep your cat distracted from the harness. Remember that short, 10-minute sessions are better and consistency is key.
Follow these steps at the same time every day and your cat will eventually know that the harness is their friend. The harness means it’s time to explore the great outdoors.
