Introducing new pets into your household.

There are few things as amazing in life as welcoming a new member into the family, whether canine, feline or other. However, as with everything in life. Preparation is key to creating an easier more comfortable transition both for you and the new member of the family.

A few basics for a successful induction into a happy household.

The first tip may seem over the top and strict, however, in the beginning, it is vital. If you have children, who are young and rather over excited at the mention of getting a puppy/kitten or an animal in general. Laying down some basic ground rules may be vital.

The reasoning is kids tend to overreact to furry things, perhaps chasing them, or hugging them too hard and so forth. It is important to make sure that your children understand not to chase the cat/dog but rather to let them approach you. As well as if they would like to love their furry friends, it should be done gently so as not to hurt or worry the new member of the family!

Have a bed available:

As if a fellow human being would have a bed to sleep in if they were to move into a new apartment, an area should be set aside for your new pet to sleep. This can range from anything between a crate or a small bed with a blanket.

Have identification tags on your animal.

As your animal is new, there are certain precautions you need to take in case they run away, as they may not be able to familiarize themselves with the new territory causing them to lost. Therefore, it is important to have some sort of identification tags on them such as a name collar, microchip information and so forth).

Ensure your house Is animal-friendly.

It is all exciting to bring a new family member home, it is also vital to ensure that the home is a safe environment where no unfortunate accidents can occur when the cat/dog is exploring their new territory, this includes hazardous cables, toxic plants or small non-edible items on the ground of your apartment.

If you already own a pet, and you are introducing a second into your house here are a few things that you should consider.

Ensure the pets are compatible.

We are not saying that you cannot have a mouse and a cat as a pet because the Cat will eat the mouse. However, there is a portion of truth in this implication. It is important to consult your nearest veterinarian to try help ensure that your new pet that you get is compatible with those at home and are least likely to cause mayhem.
