Hot Tips To Keep Your Cat Cool This Summer

Keeping your cat cool this summer is easy to do with a few simple tricks and products that won’t cost you a lot of money. With temperatures rising and heat waves lasting longer and longer each year, more heat-related illnesses are being reported to vets. So it never hurts to take a few extra precautions.

While you could go out and buy everything you need to set up kitty’s cool, new pad, there are a few hacks you can try to save you a bunch of cash. 

Groom Your Cat

Brushing or combing your cat every day will help remove a buildup of hair that will only add extra heat. If you feel adventurous, consider taking your cat to the groomers for a lion cut. This is a good idea for Persian and long-haired breeds. Besides, it makes them look ferociously cute!

Kitty On Ice

If you already have a place set up for your cat to sleep, then all you have to do is to place a few ice packs under her bedding. If not, it's easy to create an ice palace for your favourite, furry princess (or prince) out of a simple cardboard box. Place the ice packs on the bottom and a towel on top to keep your cat cool. If you want to go more upscale, check out some of the cooler pads that are currently on the market.

Keep Kitty Hydrated

Providing nice, cool water for your cat throughout the day will also help her to stay cool. You can add some ice cubes to her water bowl or check out some of those frosty water bowls on sale at your local pet store. 

Elevate Your Cat’s Bed

The idea of elevating your cat’s bed is to allow for air to circulate underneath. All you need is to raise it up off the ground by about six inches. There are some cool pet beds on the market with pedestal feet and a mesh bottom to allow maximum airflow to circulate around your cat.

Fan Your Cat

One you’ve got your kitty on ice and up off the ground, install a petsafe fan near her bed to help keep her cool. With a constant breeze blowing around her and underneath her, she’ll be cool as a cucumber all day long.

During the summer months, it’s important to make sure your cat has all she or he needs to stay cool to avoid heat-related illness, dehydration, or sunstroke. If your cat feels hot and is displaying symptoms of lethargy, panting, drooling, vomiting, and collapse, rush them to the vet immediately.
