4 Best Pet Stores in Canada

When it comes to shopping for your pet, there is no one size fits all. Shopping around is always a good thing and you’ll be surprised at how much price varies from neighbourhood to neighbourhood and from bricks-and-mortar big brand stores to online shopping.

For this pet shop review, I’ve focused solely on your average pet owner as opposed to someone who might be looking for reptiles or exotic birds. My recommendations are based entirely on my own shopping experience in the Toronto area and five important factors:

Top 4 Pet Stores in Canada

1. PetSmart, PetValu and PJ’s Pets

I’ve grouped these three superstores together because the inventory and shopping experience is very similar. The atmosphere at these stores is very friendly and it’s fun just to hang out and socialize with other dogs and dog owners. On top of great variety and price range, these pet stores have branched out to offer other services like dog grooming, dog training, doggie daycare, and pet boarding.

2. Big Al’s Aquarium

My first visit to Big Al’s was on a rainy, Sunday afternoon in Hamilton, Ontario. It was the thing to do before Ripleys Aquarium was built in Toronto! I was so enchanted by the tranquility of it all – the beauty and variety of so many beautiful fish that I became hooked (no pun intended!) and started my own aquarium. Feeding time for the sharks is on Tuesday evenings across Canada.

3. Canadian Tire

I’ve included Canadian Tire in this list because of their quality and prices (although Costco sells cheaper puppy pee-pee pads). Also, you can purchase Cesar Millan products from Canadian Tire.

4. Dollarama

While I wouldn’t trust the safety of my dog’s leash or collar to Dollarama, I do like their toys. Why pay $10 for a squeaky toy when you can buy it from Dollarama for $1.50? Also, kitty litter and poop bags are a bargain.
