5 Things Cats Do That Drive Us Bonkers!

We love our feline buddies, but there’s some things they do that can just drive us up a wall. Of course, they mean us no offense, they’re just being cats. However, these kitty “customs” can be tiresome and downright frustrating to even the most “Mary Poppins” of pet parent. Read on to discover the top five things cats do that drive us bonkers…they give a whole new meaning to the phrase pet peeves.

Clean As a Whistle…But Not For Long

It doesn’t matter how many times or what time of day I clean out my cat’s litter box, it’s like he waits for me to finish scooping the last poop, then he’ll rush in there and make another doodie (or pee pee). I’ve actually seen him awaken from a dead sleep when he hears me “digging” around in his bathroom for buried “treasure,” to race in and do his business in the clean clumping formula. As annoying as it is to never have a clean litter box, there’s a very good reason behind this behavior; cats are meticulously clean creatures. Let’s face it, if we had a choice between using a gas station restroom, or one in a five-star spa, which would we choose? Cats feel the same!

The 5 O'clock Wakeup Call

I’m not sure what it is about 5 o’clock each morning that makes by feline think I need to be up. Even when we are subject to those bi-yearly seasonal setbacks, my cat inevitable knows the five o’clock hour…I swear he can tell time! So I did a little digging on this subject and it turns out cats are more active in the dawn hours and want to be with their human companions. In addition, if you feed your cat in the morning, this habit will continue on throughout its lifetime, so if puss puss is hungry, the “keeper of the food” must be awakened!  So much for sleeping in…EVER!

The Shin Slam

My cat gets very excited when it’s time to eat, so much so that he tries to hurry along my task of putting said food in his dish by (violently) slamming his head into my shin (I actually have bruises to prove it). It doesn’t matter how much I move around to try and avoid that hard noggin of his, he will eventually make contact with my shin bone until his food is placed in front of his face. Cats will oddly show there affection by gentle bonks on the forehead, so if this daily assault on my shins is any indication, I must be REALLY loved by this animal…brings tears to my eyes (literally, everyday).

Constant Bathroom Companion

I haven’t needed any help going potty for quite some time now, but that tidbit of news seems to be lost on my beloved feline friend. He will rush into the bathroom, just before the door closes, then wait and watch while I do my “business.” If I’m really lucky, he’ll rub up against my legs while I’m currently preoccupied. He will also make a big show of sniffing the air then jump up onto the counter beside the toilet and watch as the water swirls away the offending odor. I’m not sure what is running through his kitty brain, but it’s not always easy to “make” with my constant bathroom companion on duty, but I know it’s just his love and need to be in my presence that keeps him coming back.

Is This Food For Anyone?

As I mentioned earlier, my cat loves to eat, so when it comes to my plate, it’s free game. He will stick his face in it, stand on my shoulder when I’m dinning in front of the television and even paw at my food from under the plate as if searching for the right morsel to sweep off onto the floor. I’m not sure if there’s an expert opinion on this action, but I believe the scientific words for it is “bad-mannered mooch.”
