A Chameleon As a Pet? Heck Yeah!

Even if you're not a huge fan of reptiles, the chameleon is one lizard that is too cool not to love. Not only does this critter change its color according to its mood or environment, but its prehensile tail, 360-vision eyes, super-long tongue and sticky toes make it an exciting animal to behold. These reasons are why folks want to embark on the journey of keeping a chameleon as a pet. However, before you jump into this reptile's world, there are a few things you'll want to keep in mind.

Not All Chameleon's Are Created Equally

There are 171 different chameleon species, but not all of them make good pets. Even though these lizards range in size from 0.5 inches (16 mm) up to 27 inches (69.6 cm) they will continue to grow throughout their entire lives.

This species of chameleon is one of the most colorful varieties available. To keep this reptile happy and healthy you will need a minimum enclosure size of 18 inches long (46 cm) by 18 inches wide (46 cm) by 36 inches tall (91 cm), but the bigger the better, with a bare bottom. Since all chameleons love to climb, you will want to have a variety of non-toxic plants and sticks for your pet to climb and hide among.

This reptile also needs the proper lighting. Experts recommend using both a UVB bulb and an incandescent one. The temperature of its enclosure needs to have an ambient temperature between 75 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit (24 to 30 degrees Celsius) and a basking spot of around 100 degrees (38 degrees Celsius).

Food for this species of chameleon is a variety of worms and insects including; crickets, super-worms, silkworms, hornworms, wax-worms, roaches and stick bugs. These should be dusted with a vitamin supplement for optimal nutrition. Your lizard's enclosure will also need to be misted with water throughout the day to keep the humidity levels at an optimal level and to provide it with clean water droplets to quench its thirst.

Even though chameleons are an intriguing pet, they are not for everyone. This reptile requires specialized equipment and treatment to keep it healthy and happy. Before you embark on pet parenting a chameleon, be sure to do your research and find a reputable breeder. Never purchase any exotic lizard (or animal) that has been wild caught. These animals can be full of parasites and diseases and are usually very frightened of humans which can make them more aggressive and difficult to handle.
