Owning a pet is a fantastic and pleasant experience for pet lovers. People find great companions in pets and usually consider them as very loyal. Buying pets without acquiring sufficient knowledge about their needs might land you in great trouble. Every pet needs special care and brings a lot of responsibilities with it. You should make necessary arrangements for its healthcare, lifespan, diet and liberty limitations.

There are many things to consider before you bring a pet to your home. Ask some questions to yourself to assess whether you can afford to keep a pet at your home while you might be away most of the time.

Why do you need a pet?

You may want to have pet to substitute your loneliness in the house. If yes, then you must buy an affectionate cat or a dog. Cats, dogs and ferrets turn out to be the most intelligent pets. You might also wish to have a pet that stays free and maintains little contact or you would like to have a lively pet to lighten you up after a long tiring day. If you just want to acquire a pet as your child’s companion, then develop a sense of responsibility in your child. You cannot enforce the pet’s responsibility on your child unless he or she is ready to do it. Until then take care of the animals by yourself.

Examine your environment and lifestyle

You must examine your lifestyle and environment to decide the right pet for your home. You might love to have a puppy or a kitten, but your weekday work schedule won’t let you allocate some time to the needs of a small animal. Pets such as sugar gliders and ferrets spend much of their day asleep and stay active throughout the night, while some animals don’t get upset in isolation. Pet care is also an issue if you travel frequently. You should look out for free space in your house and backyard and ensure it is safe for pets.

Think and shop wisely

Do not purchase a pet only because it looks so good at the shop. Take sufficient time to learn about the pet you want to buy. Pet shops run partiality plans to sell pets, so it would be better to gain some pet knowledge from books. More often the negative aspects of an animal are varnished over. For example, dogs of different breeds have different attributes, you can always learn about their characteristics, needs and abilities before purchasing them. Ensure whichever pet you purchase, it should be acceptable by every person in the house.

If you already have a pet at your home, think about the consequences of buying another one. Will both the pets be able to get along with each other? Are you in good health to take care of yourself and the pets? Think of your relationship with the pets you already have.

Expenses of the pets

You will have to expend a hefty sum of money to arrange a reasonable house or cage for the pet. This is besides purchasing the pet that might cost you according to what pet you choose. You will have to spend money on its food, grooming, pet sitters, veterinary care etc. All the expenses also depend on how long your pet is expected to live. Dogs and cats have an average life of about 12 – 16 years, some might live longer. Small parrots live 8 – 14 years while the larger ones have a life span of around 35 – 60 years. Tortoise and goldfish have uncertain life spans.

Pets you can consider buying

1. Dogs and cats

Dogs are supposed to be the most loyal, intelligent and obedient. They require a lot of their master’s time if they are to stay happy. Cats have been the desirable pets since the Egyptian days. They are self dependent and do well even if they must carry on all alone.

2. Ferrets

Ferrets are very desirable pets because they are extremely intelligent, curious and affectionate. They stay quiet and do well on a commercial diet of ferret or kitten chow. They live for around 8 – 10 years.

3. Rabbits

Rabbits are most often sold as pets. They are most adorable when they are babies. They behave well in homes with the cats but their needs increase as they grow older.

4. Parrots, Cockatoos, Parakeets and Cockatiels

These birds are known to be the most affectionate among all the birds that are kept as pets. They usually develop an understanding with only one member of the family.

5. Fish

Fish require continuous care to live longer. It is not possible to develop a harmonious relationship with fish. They tend to become nervous when you feed them but they are happy.

6. Farm animals

Farm animals can be very good companions. They are disciplined and affectionate but are prohibited to enter residential areas by certain laws. Their food resources are easily available at the feed store.

7. Monkey, Sugar-gliders, and Hedgehogs

These pets have never proven to be good pets for anybody. Only a few people opt for them but these are not recommended. If you want to build your own private zoo, then you can always handle them. For home purposes, they are very messy and are difficult to handle and capture, although with the passage of time they might become incredibly tame.
