Dog Pool Day

This past Labor Day weekend, many pools all over America closed for the season and drained their water to not be used again until next summer. However, some stayed open for one extra weekend, not for humans, but for their furry best friend.

This isn’t unusual. Every year, neighborhoods around America will keep at least one pool open and invite all dogs to come and have fun in the water before they drain it for good. This happens all over the country, even in the capital, and while details vary from location to location, it tends to be free and fun for all. Dogs love being able to come and try out their doggie paddles while their owners enjoy their dogs using up all their energy in one place that’s not the house. It’s good, clean fun and cools the dogs off after being stuck in a hot fur coat all summer.

In the Washington DC area, the pool changes from year to year, and this past year, the event was held at Great Waves Waterpark in Northern Virginia for just $5 a dog (human caretakers free). 

I took my own dog to this event when it took place at the pool just a block from my house, and he loved having the time to run around with other dogs and "share" toys with them. He was only willing to get into the water up to his stomach, though. Any further, and poor Franz would give us his big brown eyes and wonder why everything was so wet. After awhile, he was more than willing to jump in to retrieve his favorite squirrel toy, though. 

The 2014 Dog Pool Day may have passed, but this is an annual event and something to definitely keep an eye out for in your area next summer.
