Should I Walk My Cat?

The term, ‘walking your cat’ is probably not as accurate as the actual act of doing so. If you’ve ever ‘walked a cat,’ you’ll know what I mean. Cats like nothing better than to putter about checking things out and watching the birds, but walking a marathon is not their idea of pleasure.

So the question is, would you and your cat enjoy a stroll around the garden?

The Cat Walk

Well, it all depends on the personality of your cat. Some cats are more timid and prefer their own company. They might find the great outdoors too terrifying an experience to even ponder. But the majority of cats are more curious and adventurous, and would love nothing more than a few minutes to amble about in the backyard. 

Buy A Cat Harness

The first thing you need to do is buy your cat a harness and lead. Then you can get him or her used to wearing them inside the house. Put the harness on your cat for a few minutes at a time every day for a couple of weeks, increasing the time a little each time. 

When your cat is comfortable wearing the harness, add the leash and practise walking around your place together. You’ll know when you’re both good and ready to venture outdoors.

Walk Your Cat In The Garden

Your garden or outside your apartment or condo building is a good place to start. You really want to avoid a chance encounter with a dog or even another cat by venturing farther afield. Better to stick close to home. That way you can quickly retreat if things get too hairy out there!

Get Your Cat Vaccinated

Another tip is to make sure your cat is all up to date on their vaccinations before you head outside. 

Plant Cat Nip

Your cat will probably have more than enough things to keep them entertained outside, but why not up the ante and plant some catnip in the garden. You could also take some toys for fun, like those feather teasers that cats love so much. It might help to ease any initial anxiety too and take their mind off where they are.
