There is never a shortage of dogs prancing down the streets of Toronto with their owners and the off leash parks are always brimming with an assortment of dog breeds. But have you ever wondered which breeds top of the list of favourites?
Every year, the City of Toronto records the number of licenses issued for dogs and cats in the city according to postal code. This data also recognizes the different types of breed, whether it’s dogs or cats.
Last year the number of licenses issued for pets in Toronto was more than 60,000 and over 40,000 were for dogs. So which breeds were the most popular?
The labrador retriever has been a fan favourite for years and years, probably due to this breed’s gentle, affectionate and loyal nature. They make great family pets and are easy to train because they’re smart.
Next on the list is the golden retriever who shares many of the same breed traits as the labrador. These lovable dogs have long, beautiful coats and often walk around with a smile on their faces. They will greet any human they encounter with the same friendly, kind attitude and love chasing after a ball.
Third on the list is the Shih Tzu. This small, companion dog is known for its clever, affectionate, playful nature and is quite content to stay cuddled up on the couch on a cold, wintry day. They are low shed and grown anywhere between eight and 16 pounds.

The City of Toronto also records the number of licenses registered for cats. In 2020, 12,911 domestic shorthair cats, 1,841 domestic mediumhair and 1,272 domestic longhair cats made the top three for most popular. Other breeds to make the list for 2020 include:
- 272 Siamese cats
- 151 Ragdoll cats
- 30 Sphynx
- 90 Bengal cats
