Trouble In The Litter Box

Contrary to popular belief, not all cats take to their litter box. Some may prefer a favourite spot in the house to relieve themselves, much to the dismay of their pet-parents. Even those cats who instinctively do their business in the box can develop an aversion to it over time.
So what can you do to entice your cat to use the litter box each time nature calls?
Here are a few tips to keep your kitty happy and your litter box appealing:
1. Check to make sure your cat’s aversion to using the litter box is not a medical reason. If they have started eliminating elsewhere in the house, then it might be time for a visit to the vet.
2. Scoop out your kitty litter box every day. Not only will this make it more hygienic for your cat, but they will be more likely to use their litter box if it’s free of waste.
3. Empty your cat’s litter box twice a week and give it a good clean before replacing the litter with fresh. Cat’s are notoriously clean animals and appreciate a tidy place to go to the bathroom.
4. Try not to fill the litter box too full, as this will deter your cat from using it. One to two inches is about all you need for litter.
5. Check to see how your cat reacts to their litter box. Is it big enough for them? Does it have a hood that is freaking them out? Do you use a liner that perhaps causes your cat alarm when she steps into the box? Assessing their behaviour in the litter box can give you valuable clues as to the reason why your cat is averse to using it.
6. Is your cat’s litter box in an accessible and well-lit, quiet place where they feel comfortable?
7. Have you changed brands of kitty litter? If this coincides with your cat turning their nose up at the litter box, you may have to replace it with another type of litter.
8. Another factor that plays into your cat’s behaviour towards their litter box includes the age and mobility of your cat. Is the box too high that makes it difficult for older cats to get in and out?
9. Do you have more than one cat using the litter box? If you are a multi-cat household, it’s best to provide one litter box for each cat.
As you can see there are many reasons why your cat may not be using their litter box like you want them to. Try a few of these different suggestions, observe their attitude, and make sure there isn’t a health issue that’s presenting problems with elimination. With a little coaxing and some regular hygiene habits, you can soon litter train your cat successfully.
