It’s not easy finding a place to live with your pet, but you can find them if you look hard enough. It might take a little longer to find a pet friendly rental, but surely it’s better than giving up on your pet. They’re a member of your family and where you go, they go. No question! Too many pets end up in shelters because their owners moved into a building with a ‘no pets’ clause. So here are a few tactics you can use to help you find a rented living space that will love your pets too!
 

Do You Allow Pets?


It might sound obvious, but your first step is to search for pet friendly buildings in your area. Lots of rental websites allow you to filter your search and look for ’pet friendly’ or ‘pets allowed’ rentals. Privately owned rentals will often be more accepting of pets than a big property management company. So bear that in mind too.

Ask Local Animal Experts


Check with the local vets, shelters and humane societies to see if they can point you in the right direction. They’re usually the best people to ask.

Pet Resume


Yes, you read that right. Your pet needs a resume proving he or she is of good character, well-behaved, house trained and up to date on all vaccinations. This is what you’ll need:

  • Vaccination records
  • Reference letters from previous landlords, neighbours, dog walkers, trainers and vets
  • Any doggie obedience training certificates
  • Positive characteristics of your pet’s breed

If you show up with a pet resume when you meet the landlord, you will score big points and improve your chances of moving in with your beloved animal.
 

Sign On The Dotted Line


When it comes time to sign the lease, make sure you read the fine print. Many leases contain a ‘no pets allowed’ clause, so ask your landlord to please remove it before you sign. You might even want to give your landlord a damage deposit to keep them happy.
