5 Common Cat Myths Debunked

Even though cats have been domesticated for quite some time now, there are still many myths that swirl around this species. Some of these originated back in the ancient days, while others were spun or misconstrued from old-wives tales. Think you know the truth about these furry creatures? Read on to discover the facts over the fiction of our feline friends.

Cats Have Nine Lives

Well some cats seem to get themselves into predicaments that should end their lives (curiosity killed the cat) the old adage that they have nine lives is simply not true. This myth most likely originated back with the Egyptians when the god, Atum-Ra, would assume the form of a cat to visit the underworld. Although, these types of legends seem far-fetched to us now, people are still believing the myth due to a cat’s (supposed) ability to fall from a high place and not be injured. Which leads us to our next myth…

Cats Always Land on Their Feet

Although, this statement is not one hundred percent myth. the fact that people believe a cat can fall from a great distance and still be left unharmed is not accurate. The feline species is capable of righting itself in the air (if time allows) because of its flexible spine; however, a long fall can still result in broken bones, internal damage and even death.

A Cat Will Steal an Infant’s Breath Away

Felines are heat and comfort-seekers and what better place to find both (in a cat’s opinion) than with a sleeping infant? Although, this is not recommended as young babies do not have the ability to move away from a snuggly cat, the animal is in no way trying to steal away the child’s breath. This myth may have been started when households had a cat and the baby died of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Without the proper knowledge of this horrific incident a cat could very well be blamed for the baby’s demise.

Cats Hate Water

While it is mostly true that cats hate having a bath, this blanket statement is not true for all felines. In fact, the Siamese is one breed that actually has been noted as joining their pet parent in the shower. Other cats find running water utterly fascinating  and will often times puddle and play under a dripping or slow running faucet.

Cats Should Not Live With Pregnant Women

Although, there is a condition known as ‘taxoplasmosis’ which can affect an unborn baby, it is well documented that a pregnant woman is more likely to contract this condition from handling raw meat or digging in the soil of a garden, than from a cat’s feces. However, to be on the safe side, women who are carrying should either not clean out a litter box, or do so wearing gloves and a mask. Many cats have been rehomed due to this myth, so let’s end it now.

The rumors and myths that have followed our felines around for centuries need to come to and end once-and-for-all. When you hear folks spreading these untruths, be sure to let them know that it is only a myth. Who knows?  You may just say a cat from being misjudged or worse yet, rehomed.
