Ferrets As Pets? Get Ready…

The ferret has been domesticated for over 2,000 years and it’s no wonder as to why. These weasel-like animals are a bundle of energy and absolutely adorable. But before you get lost in their silly antics and cute little faces, here are some thing to keep in mind when it comes to being a pet parent to a ferret.

Ferrets Are Rambunctious

Ferrets seem to have a never-ending resource of energy. For this reason it is best to keep this pet in pairs. When ferrets play you will notice a lot of nipping at one-another. The ferret’s skin is very tough, so to them, this is a natural way to socialize. However, the playful nip of one of these pets on the human skin can be painful. so training your ferret how to interact with humans is going to be necessary.

Ferret proofing the area or room you are going to let your ferrets play in is paramount. These critters are highly intelligent and will figure out how to open cabinets or chew their way into something they deem as “fun.” In addition, ferrets are very good at squeezing their bodies through small openings. Block off any area where your pet may fit to prevent accidents or escaping from happening.

Ferrets Need Veterinary Care

Just like our canine and feline friends, ferrets need regular veterinary checkups, vaccinations and flea prevention. In addition, male ferrets should be neutered around six months-old. Females also should be spayed as once they come into heat, they remain so until they have mated. This puts them at a higher risk of Pyometra which can lead to death if left untreated. Altering your pet ferret also cuts down on their natural musky odor, which some people may find unpleasant.

Ferrets Love to Play and Explore

To keep your furry pals happy, they will need a variety of toys and places to explore. In the wild, ferrets love to tunnel, so provide your pets with plenty of tubes to run and chase each other through. If you can, provide them with a clean sand box to dig in, cardboard boxes to explore and various balls and other cat toys to play with and investigate. Pet manufacturers also make specific toys made just for this species.

Ferret Equipment

You will need a spacious cage to keep your pet ferrets in. These are usually designed with multi-levels with places to put a litter box, a hammock, food dishes and a hiding place. The cage will need to be cleaned often as well as all the equipment inside the cage. But keep in mind, these cages are not designed to keep your ferrets in over long periods-of-time. Your pets need daily exercise and time away from the cage, so be prepared to give your ferrets the free-range time they crave and so deserve.

Ferret Training

Like any other pet, the ferret will need specific training. This includes how to socialize with humans, litter box training, how to walk on a leash and even some very basic tricks. Training a ferret to do any of these is going to take time, patience and understanding on your part. Be prepared for some setbacks, but keep going. Sooner or later, your pets will be responding to your commands.

Feeding Your Ferret

This may be a tricky subject and will take some research and reading food labels on your part. Many ferret foods are based on fish. However, this is not a good choice for pet ferrets. In fact, some ferrets will not eat a fish-based food (fish is for minks, not ferrets). In addition, since this animal is carnivorous, it needs meat and only a small amount of grains and vegetables. Too much grain and veggies in your ferret’s diet can lead to cancer known as insulinoma.  Read the labels of the ferret food bags to get a high-quality and nutritious diet that won’t lead to any health issues down the road.

Ferrets and Children

Experts do not recommend ferrets for small children. This pet can be too rambunctious and rough for younger children, which could lead to injury on both the animal and the child’s part. Children 12 and up are suitable for having pet ferrets as long as they have been taught the proper handling techniques of this pet.
