5 Recommended Animal Shelters for Small PetsWhen we think of animal rescue, most of us conjure up images of dogs and cats incarcerated behind bars in a cold, clinical animal shelter somewhere, counting off the days like prisoners on death row.

Thankfully these days, most animal shelters and rescues, and even humane societies, will now foster out their animals to ensure these pets are well taken care of and monitored for any health or behavioral problems before securing them a permanent home. The adoption process is stricter and more in-depth now too, making the transition from foster care to the pets’ new homes easier on their mental and physical health.

But what you might not know is that you can rescue just about any kind of pet from an animal shelter. From turtles and hamsters to Guinea pigs and budgies, animal rescues are no longer reserved for just dogs and cats.

It might seem strange that these small animals find their way into animal shelters, but the most common reason is people (most likely, kids) get bored. The fascination wears off, cleaning the cage becomes a chore and Mom was never really keen on the idea in the first place. And some of these animals can live long, healthy lives and their child owners simply outgrow them and move on.

While it might seem a good idea to give away these pets for free just to be rid of them, bear in mind you may be sentencing them to a worse fate than you could imagine: snake bait.

Once you’ve made the decision to either rescue an animal or give one up for adoption, you’ll want to find a reputable shelter that will ensure your pet has a happy life.

There are many reputable animal shelters and rescues worthy of mention, if only we had the space. So try asking your vet or check out your local pet food store to find one in your area that you can trust.
