If you haven’t heard of the TV program BBC Earth and you’re an animal lover, you’ll want to sign up immediately because you’re missing out.
Fortunately, the good people at the BBC have posted a video on their YouTube channel highlighting the best bits about dogs. It’s a fascinating look at the world of dogs and how they enhance our lives. It will make you smile, it will make you gasp, and it will make you cry, so buckle up while we tell you what to expect.
A Puppy’s Senses
As an introduction to this wonderful world of canines, we see a puppy opening their eyes for the first time at two weeks old. Fascinated by the world he has been living in for the past two weeks, he’s keen to explore his new space. But what does that look like? We often hear that dogs are colour blind, but is this necessarily true? The answer is, no. Dogs have two colour receptors in their eyes for blue and yellow and can see a spectrum of these colours including green.
There are more interesting things to know about dog’s sense of sight. Their eyes process images much faster than humans which is why they are so good at catching balls and prey at high speeds
Dogs Are Smart
Just how smart are dogs? Well, if you were to take the time to consistently work with and train a dog for about a period of three years, you could end up with a dog as smart as Chaser the border collie. After working with psychology professor John W. Pilley, Chaser’s vocabulary grew to 1,022 words, represented by:
- 116 balls
- 26 frisbees
- 800+ stuffed toys
Wild Dogs Of Africa Are At Risk Of Extinction
Wild dogs feature in this slide reel of Best Dogs of BBC Earth as there are only 3,000 left in Africa, which puts them on the list of endangered species. As we follow the story of two mating pairs by the name of Aladdin and Feather, we see how loving, protective and devoted they are to each other. Even as wild dogs, you can see the loving, loyal nature of our beloved domesticated pups come to life.
Dogs Save Human Lives
From the snow-loving dogs in the Arctic Circle protecting their caregivers from polar bears to the cancer-detecting canines saving their owner’s lives, it’s almost as if these amazing creatures were put on this earth to protect us from danger.
