Do Cats and Dogs Need Sunscreen?

When the sun comes out, everybody wants to soak it up. Cats are quick to find the warmest, sunniest spot in the house and dogs love to lounge on a sun-drenched porch. But like humans, your pets need to protect their skin against the sun’s harmful rays, especially in the summertime.

Sun-Soaked Cats

During the summer months, particular attention is needed in caring for your pets. While it’s nice to see kitty curled up in your sunny window, it’s better to keep her out of the sun. When you’re at home, it’s easy to keep an eye on her and monitor the amount of time spent in the sun, but when you’re away at work, you’ll need to keep the blinds down or the door closed. 

Sun-Loving Dogs

For dogs, it’s better to get your walks done early in the morning and after sunset at night. The hottest time of day is during the hours of eight in the morning and five in the evening, so try to avoid too much exposure during these times. If your dog is outside, he needs shade, water and shelter to escape the heat of the sun. That’s usually a good sign it’s time to go inside. 

Keep Your Pets Indoors During a Heat Wave

When temperatures soar like during a heat wave, it’s best to keep your pets indoors in a cool, air-conditioned room. It might take a change in your routine, but try to schedule outdoor trips with your dog to the early hours of the morning and after dusk at night. 

Sun-Related Illnesses in Pets Are on the Rise

Sun-related illnesses are on the increase, according to one pet insurance company in England that reported a 20% increase in 2014. Dehydration, sunburn, and skin cancer are common among pets, and treatment can be very pricey. 

Fur Is No Protection Against the Sun

Your pet’s fur is not enough to protect them from the sun’s harmful rays, especially cats and dogs with light or white fur. But you can easily get into the habit of applying sunscreen before they go outside or are exposed to the sun. 

Use Sunscreen for Pets

You can find many brands of sunscreen designed especially for pets like Epi-Pet that are free of zinc oxide, which can be toxic to pets. You can also use some baby sunscreens or organic sunscreens like the brand Badger. You need only apply the cream to exposed areas. 

Sometimes a T-shirt can also help protect larger areas of the body and keep pets cool. There’s also some pretty cool hats your cat or dog might like! If you do notice skin sores or ulcers, make sure you consult your veterinarian right away. And enjoy a safe summer!
