Keeping pets in the house has become more popular than ever, probably because pets are a source of relaxation and amusement. People find pets as very loyal companions and beneficial for many purposes. Often people mention their pets as their best companions and consider them a wise investment. This is because when they spend money on these pets to bring them home, they get improved health and happiness in return. A survey conducted by the American Veterinary Medical Association reported that most of the participants in the survey regarded their pets as their best companions.

Usually when people come back home tired, their pets are the first ones to greet them. Studies indicate that pets are great stress busters for people of all ages; they help to lower down blood pressures and harmful stress hormones like cortisol. People who have stronger relationship with their pets are more likely to get rid of stress quickly than people who spend shorter periods of time with their pets. Pets love their owners unconditionally without being judgmental unlike people.

A pet is not only a loyal companion for people who are alone but also helps them to extend their network in many ways. For instance, an elderly person who goes out for a walk with his dog develops friendly relationships with other people and probably makes some friends. Pets become an integral part of such people who live alone or are feeling lonely. Elderly people who often fail to retain their significance in their homes find pets as a source of healthy social recreation that is difficult to obtain from a caretaker. Pets have proved as great antidepressants in cases where elderly people are forced to lead lonely lives.

Apart from elderly people, pets are equally beneficial for people with disabilities who are unable to connect socially. The disabled people often develop communication disorders that become a barrier for them to interact with people. Such people find pets as approachable, loyal, loving and playful.

Sometimes when everything else remains the same, an animal’s presence can make all the difference. A group of patients suffering from depression carried out exercises watching dolphins every day and achieved successful results unlike patients who exercised without watching dolphins.

Children share a very good rapport with pets because they find them very fascinating. A responsible child takes better care of its pets than the grown up people. In a research study it was found that children with different diseases recovered quickly when they acquired pets than the children who remained without pets. Also, children who had kept pets with them during their childhood displayed more confidence than children who never kept pets with them in their childhood.
