Small animals are probably the best way to start learning how to care for pets, not to mention they make a great little friend for children while growing up!
For the most part, small animals are pretty low maintenance when it comes to care, well at least when you compare them to bigger animals like dogs or cats who need more space to run around or are more emotionally and environmentally demanding.
For example, small pets in general can be kept in small cages and eat dry food that can be put in dishes and distributers, rather than wet food that has be put out on a routine basis. Also, these cages often can go for fairly long periods without needing to be cleaned; although it’s very important to know exactly the kind of care each type of animal needs to ensure that you’re not unknowingly neglecting their needs.

Hermit Crabs

Betta Fish
Fun Fact: These fish are nick named Fighter Fish because they will tare each other to shreds in the right conditions – so make sure you don’t put them with others!

Ferret
Fun Fact: Ferrets are incredibly flexible and can work there way into and through incredibly small places.

Parrots
