It’s the perfect time to form a bond with your kitten, so you’ll want to make it count and set aside enough time so you can enjoy this phase of their life. Nutrition needs of your kitten
Every kitten needs a good start in life and that responsibility falls down to you. This is the beginning of a partnership that could essentially, with the right care and proper attention, could last a couple of decades. So like every other pet parent before you, start with a healthy kitten-recommended diet. High energy kittens grow up fast and burn a lot of calories in a day, they need a protein-rich food that’s kind to the stomach. If you change your kitten’s food, do so gradually to avoid stomach upset.
Potty train your kitten
It doesn’t take long for your kitten to catch onto the idea of using the kitty litter box. After all, they’ve spent the first eight to 10 weeks watching their mama using the litter tray, so they know what to do. If you place a couple of litter boxes within their living quarters, you’ll be fully prepared if you have to quickly redirect them to the box. Coax them with treats, reward them afterward, and never use punishment as a training device.
Create a kitten-friendly zone
For your sake and that of your kitten’s, create some boundaries for them to roam. Try them in a spare room at first, where you can set up their food, water, litter box and sleeping quarters. Make sure you hang out with your kitten and keep an eye on them, because we all know how adventurous and curious they can be. So much to explore in a new place and so many potential hazards like electric cables, open doors and windows, and precious vases.
Healthy kittens need sleep to grow
Not only will your kitten feel more secure knowing they have a space all their own where they can hang out, he or she will love the peace and quiet for kitty naps. Like all growing young-uns, kittens sleep a lot, like 16 to 20 hours a day. Of course, felines are naturally night creatures, so don’t be surprised if your new kitten wants your attention during the night. She’ll soon get used to your routine and know you need your sleep as much as she does.
Your kitten will grow up right before your eyes, so make sure you take lots of photos and capture the funniest moments on video. Before you know it, they’ll be an adult, so enjoy and give your kitten the best start in life.
