You're Back To School But What About Your Pets?

With kids returning back to school and parents getting back into the full swing of busy work schedules again, your pets will find themselves home alone and the adjustment could very well stress them out and cause behavioral changes. If you’re one of the many households that got a new pet this holiday season, the reality of your new responsibility is about to sink in.

The holiday season is always a popular and tempting time to get a new pet. But when the festivities are over and you have less time to spend with your new pet, you’ll want to consider your options and how you can best take care of them while you’re away at work or school.

Family, Friends and Neighbours

Try asking family members, next door neighbours or friends if they have any time to stop in and check on your pet. If you have a puppy, he or she will need a pee break and some company during the day to keep them happy.

Doggie Daycare

Daycare is another option, though your dog needs to be a certain age and have all their shots before you can enroll them. It’s always a good idea to check out the facility before you commit and make sure your dog will be safe and in the company of friendly dogs.

Pet Nannies

Pet nannies are another option worth considering, as they can take care of a variety of pets and their individual needs. Pet nannies will visit your pets at home, feed them, play with them and let them out in the backyard for some exercise. It’s a great way to break up your pet’s day and give them a little lovin’ before you get home.

Dog Walkers

Dog walkers are always good people to know as they have experience working with different breeds and ages of dogs. They also offer a range of services from dog walking to pet sitting to taking your pet to the vet or groomer. To find a reliable dog walker in your neighbourhood, check with your vet first or frequent the local dog park and talk to a few people.

Special Needs

If your pet has special needs and requires medication or injections throughout the day, then you’ll need to hire someone who can come in and do that while you’re away at work. Pet nannies and dog walkers often provide this service. Just make sure you’re hiring someone reputable who is licensed, fully insured and has a clean criminal record.

Pets are a big responsibility, but the better you take care of them the longer they will love you unconditionally. And that’s the kind of thing you can’t put a price on.
