Your kitten surpise gift might not be appreciated
Surprising your child with a kitten for Christmas, especially if they’ve been wishing for one forever, is a lovely thought, but consider who will be the cat’s full-time caregiver. The kitten and your child will grow up; your child will leave home and go to college, your cat will stay home with you. So be prepared and committed to look after your new addition for the rest of his or her healthy life.
Kittens need time to adjust to their new surroundings
From your kitten’s perspective, the Holidays are a busy time of year with a lot of hustle and bustle and people coming and going. Is it really the right time to bring a timid, little kitten into your home at such a stressful time of year? Your kitten needs time to adjust to his or her new surroundings and furthermore, they need time to bond with their new caregivers. Maybe wait until after the Holidays when it quietens down a bit, and all your house guests have gone. A New Year’s kitten can be equally delightful.
When you can't say no to a festive feline
If it’s a stray that shows up on your doorstep on Christmas Eve, then by all means welcome them into your home for some warmth and Holiday cheer. Or if someone is looking to rehome their beloved feline at this time of year, then welcome them in with open arms. At least during the Holidays you’ll be home to help them settle in. Consider setting up a quiet room for them where they can soak up their new environment away from the festive bustle.
