Goldfish Don’t Have to Be Boring

When you hear “goldfish” you may conjure up an image of a boring ole fish that just happens to be gold. But that isn’t the case. In fact, there are around 300 different types of goldfish today. Of course, we can’t possibly cover all of them, so we’ve chosen five of the coolest for you to peruse.

The Black Moor

Okay, so this “goldfish” isn’t exactly gold in color, but it is indeed still considered a part of this fish species. This fish has protruding eyes and is jet black in color. It is also extremely hardy and is a good choice for beginners or even to live in a suitable outdoor pond.

The Lionhead Goldfish

As the name suggests this goldfish has a huge “mane-like” head that is actually quite soft to the touch, but is not easily torn despite its fleshy nature. It is also a slow swimmer mostly due to the fact that this species lacks a dorsal or top fin. For this reason, the Lionhead needs to be kept with only other slow-movers. In addition, it cannot tolerate outdoor ponds or fast-moving water. The Lionhead is not recommended for novices.

The Ryukin Goldfish

Our next cool goldfish is beautiful to behold even though it sports a large hump on its back. The “prized” ones have long flowing fins and are actually a good beginner goldfish for those interested in starting up a cold water aquarium.

The Bubble Eye Goldfish

The Bubble Eye goldfish may look like its had too much silicon implanted into its cheeks, but these pouches are actually filled with fluid and are extremely delicate. For this reason, they must be in slow moving water. They are poor swimmers and spend the majority of their time resting on the bottom of the tank (no gravel or “sharp” objects should be in this guy’s environment). In addition, the Bubble Eye is not recommended for beginners.

The Fantail Goldfish

Albeit a common goldfish, the Fantail is a favorite among goldfish keepers. This fish species will grow long beautiful split fins on its tail that flows behind it as it investigates its surroundings. It is a hearty fish that can even do well in well cared for ponds and is great for beginners.

Goldfish As Pets

Goldfish can make excellent pets. With the proper setup, you too can indulge in the hobby of goldfish keeping. We never recommend keeping this type of fish in a bowl as it does not provide the proper filtration or aeration a fish needs. With the scheduled maintenance of its habitat, you could have your goldfish for years-to-come.
