How to Prevent Heat Stokes in Dogs

July 6, 2015

Chow_Chow_im_Harz2Summer is upon us! Are you and your pooch ready for a fun game of catch in the beautiful warm weather? Not so fast! The weather has been very warm, we need to be cautious of our dogs over heating. When we feel the heat, our dogs feel the heat as well. An innocent game of fetch could turn into an emergency if we are not carful.

Dogs are more prone to heat stress than humans are because they often have heavy coats, and they cannot sweat like we do. Breeds that have double coats, mastiffs, and dogs with snub noses are all inclined to overheat and in addition they can develop breathing difficulties, which can lead to a collapse!

The best way to prevent a heat stroke is to know the signs. Symptoms of a heat stroke are:

  • Increased heart tare
  • Increased salivation
  • Excessive Panting
  • Red or pale gums
  • Weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea

Here are some tips to keeping your pooch cool this summer.

  • When going for a walk or spending time outdoors, make sure to bring lots of water for yourself and your pooch. Using stainless-steel bowls and placing them in shady areas will keep the water cool.
  • You can provide a shallow pool, like a kids pool. The quickest way for your dog to cool down is by letting it stand or lay in water.
  • Avoid fast walks or runs on hot days. A good time to take your dog for a run would be dawn and dusk.
  • Never leave your dog in the car. Even if you are just making a quick stop, and even with the windows open. The temperature inside a car can increase rapidly and can quickly become fatal.
  • You can freeze 2L water bottles and wrap them with a cloth and put them in a shady place near the pets resting place. This will provide a cool place for your pet to lay near.
  • You can bring a spray bottle filled with cold water, or even a sprinkler that your dog can play with.
  • Do not muzzle your dog on hot days. If your dog needs to wear a muzzle on walks, make sure you walk during the cooler times of the day.
  • When planning day trips for your family and your dog, try to find places that will give the dog lots of access to shade, water and/or a lake or beach to swim in!

By following these steps you will be keeping your dog safe, and cool during the summer months!
