The Ontario SPCA reported that 30% of Canadians adopted a pet during the pandemic. That’s more than 2 million adoptions. How do these numbers compare to the US? According to the American SPCA, more than 23 million American households or 1 in 5 nationwide adopted a pet during the pandemic.

Pandemic Pups Fly Private
With Omicron raging large in Hong Kong and other areas of China, there has been an increasing urge for expats working in that region to relocate to safer areas. Trouble is, many of their pets have been left behind.
While the less conscionable of those leaving the country, have conveniently dumped their pets off at the local animal shelter, other more loving pet owners are chartering private jets to fly their pets safely to their new homes.
According to CNN, groups of pet owners have pooled their resources together to charter private jets for their pets. With stricter restrictions and higher prices on almost every airline ticket, it makes sense to tag along with their pets and enjoy the ride aboard a private jet.
Pet Owners Face Penalties
The Hong Kong Free Press reported on how the surge of cases in Hong Kong has resulted in stricter Covid-related regulations for pet owners. The new laws state that if a pet owner is a Covid risk and has been ordered to self-isolate, then their pets must hand over their pets to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department. Refusal to do so means a fine of up to HK$10,000 and six months in prison.
Missing Cat Found After 5 Years
Kiki, a Burmese cat who had gone missing from her home in Edmonton in 2017, made a good news story on Global when she turned up five years later. The owners had since moved to Ontario and given up hope. Thanks to an Edmonton phone number that Kiki’s pet mom had refused to change after moving to Ontario, Kiki was rescued and returned to her astonished owners. Despite losing an ear to the harsh Edmonton winters, Kiki was in good health and in need of some well-earned grooming and TLC.
The Cost of Cloning Your Pet
While it might sound like the perfect solution to keeping your beloved pets alive forever, cloning comes at a cost. According to The Washington Post, you can spend tens of thousands of dollars to clone your beloved pet, but that doesn’t mean they’ll have the same personality.
Sure, they might look identical and share the same quirky traits, but their minds will be a blank slate. As they grow and experience the world, their personality will develop and they’ll be a totally different pet. So save your money and return to the same breeder or animal shelter for your next pet and embrace the moment as a new experience.
